Roberts Taken by Oakland in 26th Round of 2011 MLB Draft
Former Keydet shortstop Sam Roberts (Prince George, Va.) has been drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 26th round of the Major League Baseball draft, which took place Tuesday via conference call.
Head baseball coach Marlin Ikenberry, the winningest coach in VMI history, completed a decade at the Institute with the conclusion of the 2013 season.
Jonathan Hadra, a four-year letterman and 2004 graduate of VMI, completed his fourth season of his second tour with VMI in 2013. Hadra works with the infielders and hitters, and in 2011, added recruiting coordinator to those duties.
Travis Beazley, former Boston Red Sox minor leaguer and Randolph-Macon assistant coach, recently completed his second year, 2013, as the VMI pitching coach. The rotation took the pitching headline efforts, as Connor Bach ranked in the Big South's top 10 in opponent batting average (.207) and ERA (2.81) while developing into VMI's Friday starter, while Reed Garrett and T.J. Lighton each earned a Big South Pitcher of the Week nod for a complete game shutout, with Lighton's marking the first time VMI had blanked Virginia Tech since April of 1962.
Volunteer Assistant Coach
2013 marked the first full season as VMI's volunteer assistant coach for former Keydet catcher Mike Roberts. Roberts worked primarily with the catchers, including Second Team All-Big South honoree Matt Winn, and the baserunners, including outfielder Brandon Angus, who had the eighth-most stolen bases in a single season in Keydet history. He also assisted with outfield work on game days and fulfilled a variety of other roles throughout the season.
Roberts joined the VMI coaching staff for his first post-graduate collegiate coaching role in August of 2012, following a professional career with the Milwaukee Brewer organization, a career that began after being drafted in 2008. Roberts hit .270 with Helena in rookie ball that year and would go on to spend the majority of the following three seasons with the Brevard County Manatees in the Florida State League (Class A). He returned to spring training with the organization this year and played in extended spring training, including at least one appearance against his brother Sam Roberts '11, a former VMI teammate and current member of the Oakland organization.
The former Keydet catcher returned to VMI in the fall of both 2010 and 2011, serving as a student assistant coach while completing his degree.
