Record Number Of Blue Devils Drafted On Day Two

A record-tying four Duke baseball players were selected on day two of the 2009 MLB First Year Player Draft on Wednesday, marking only the second time in school history that four Duke players were drafted in the same year.

Senior first baseman Nate Freiman was the first Duke player to go off the board when he was selected by the San Diego Padres in the eighth round with the 234th overall pick. Following him were senior starter Andrew Wolcott (17th Round - Arizona Diamondbacks), catcher Matt Williams (18th Round - Chicago Cubs) and OF/RHP Alex Hassan (20th Round - Boston Red Sox).

Those four Blue Devils also become the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh players to be drafted under fourth-year head coach Sean McNally, who has seen at least one player drafted in each of the last three seasons.

Incoming freshman catcher Steven Baron (Compensation Round A - Seattle Mariners) was also picked as the 33rd overall pick on day one, while incoming shortstop Marcus Stroman (18th Round - Washington Nationals) was taken 532nd overall and incoming left-handed pitcher Cameron Coffey (22nd Round - Baltimore Orioles) was taken 656th overall.

Camp Details

This camp will stress the proper fundamentals of every facet of pitching, catching, infield and outfield play. Each camper will be given the same instruction that has helped the Blue Devils rank at the top of the country in fielding the past two seasons and allowed the pitching staff to finish in the top ten in ERA during the 2008 season. All instruction will come from the Duke coaching staff which has a combined 37 years of professional coaching experience.

Campers who are 7-18 years of age will be taught the fundamentals of throwing and catching, and the fundamentals of each position (infield, outfield, pitching and catching). In the afternoon they will play a game.

General Information

Each camper must bring his own baseball equipment. Players should bring a glove, bat, cleats/spikes, running shoes or turf shoes, hat, and any other equipment they feel necessary to compete. Catchers must bring their own gear. Helmets will be provided. Every camper in attendance will be given a camp T-Shirt.

1. Exit the Airport on Westbound I-40
2. After 4 miles, merge on to NC-147N towards
Durham/Downtown. Exit No. 279B
3. After 8.5 miles, exit Chapel Hill Street. Exit No. 13
4. Chapel Hill Street becomes Duke University Road
5. Proceed to dead end, turn right on HW 751
6. At next stop light (Science Drive), turn right.
7. Turn right on Whitford Drive (Jack Coombs Field ahead on left).

From points north traveling on S I-85
1. Exit 15-501 Bypass South
2. On 15-501, Exit at HW 751, turn left at the light.
3. Proceed to third light (Science Dr.) and turn left.
4 . Turn right on Whitford Drive (Jack Coombs Field ahead on left).

From points south traveling on N I-85
1. Exit on HW 751, Exit No. 170
2. Turn right at first light.
3. Go three miles and at the fourth light, turn left on Science Drive.
4. Turn right on Whitford Drive (Jack Coombs Field ahead on left).

Miscellaneous Camp Info

Refund policy
We do not offer refunds on canceled campers, just a future camp credit if you decide to purchase Cancellation Protection. Cancel Protection allows you to cancel camp up to one day from the start date and receive a full camp credit that you may use at a future camp.

If you do not choose to purchase Cancel Protection there will be no refunds, no transfers and no future camp credits.
