UMES Baseball announces Captains for 2010

Juniors Remo Orsini (Elkton, Md.), Matt Witte (Westminster, Md.) and Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) have been named captains of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team for the 2010 season, head coach Will Gardner announced Tuesday.

"These are three outstanding choices," Gardner said. "What's even more gratifying is that these guys were chosen by their peers. It says a lot of their character for their teammates to nominate them for such a distinguished leadership role."

Orsini, a middle infielder, is the lone returning captain from last year's team which earned the No. 4 seed in the MEAC tournament with a 9-9 conference record. He hit .255 in 48 games and 145 at-bats with eight doubles and 20 RBIs. Orsini was 8-for-14 on the bases and had a .938 fielding percentage.

Designated hitter Chaikowsky was named an All-MEAC Second Team selection and to MEAC All-Tournament Team in 2009. He led the Hawks in batting average (.381), doubles (13), slugging (.619) and on-base percentage (.486) and tied for the team lead with four triples and two home runs.

Witte, a right-handed pitcher, compiled 3-4 mark and 6.45 ERA in 18 appearances on the mound last season. In 67 innings he had 49 strikeouts, two complete games and one shutout.

Gardner was pleased for the close decision to choose captains where each of team's four seniors received votes.

"This says a lot about the leadership this team should carry into the 2010 campaign," he said. "We're very excited to get things going."

UMES opens the season Feb. 19-21 at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
