Baseball Inks Largest Recruiting Class Ever

Head coach Craig Cozart has announced the signing of the largest recruiting class in High Point baseball history, inking 15 student-athletes during the NCAA early signing period to join the High Point baseball program next fall. The Panthers signed players from a variety of states led by Florida with four, followed up by North Carolina and New York with three apiece.

"We are very excited with the development of our first ever recruiting class here at High Point University," said head coach Craig Cozart. "An incredible amount of work in a short period of time was done to make this class a reality. The credit has to go to our recruiting coordinator Coach Peters with the assistance of Coach Wallace. Their aggressive approach with this class combined with the academic and athletic momentum here on campus allowed us to sign the highest level of student-athlete. The talent of this class will gel nicely with the players we have returning next year and allow us to continue to take steps toward building a nationally competitive program. We welcome these quality student athletes to the High Point family and anticipate great things from them in the future."

Following up on what Cozart said was recruiting coordinator Bryan Peters who was happy that so many quality players decided to further their academic and playing careers at High Point. "This is a very important recruiting class for a few reasons. Number one, it is our first recruiting class, so it is something we wanted to set the standard for the new perception and expectations that we have for this program. Secondly, we have twelve seniors on this year's team so we have a lot of gaps that needed to be filled for next year. That also gave us a lot of room to bring in this many new guys. We feel we set the tone for years to come with the quality and depth of this year's class."

Craig Cozart

Head Coach: High Point University

Cozart came to HPU following a highly successful 12-year coaching stint at UCF, where he moved up the ranks from student assistant to associate head coach during his tenure. A key member of the Knight coaching staff over the past decade, he helped develop UCF into one of the nation's elite Division I baseball programs. In his role as the pitching coach, Cozart built a tradition of pitching excellence during his time at UCF.

At UCF, Cozart helped guide the Knights to a 455-274 overall mark during his 12 seasons on the coaching staff. The Knights made five NCAA Tournaments appearances during that stretch and also captured four conference championships. Cozart's coaching career at UCF also featured six Top 25 final national rankings including a Top 10 finish in 2001, when the Knights boasted a program best 51-14 record. In addition, each of his last three recruiting classes at UCF were ranked in the Top 40 nationally including the 2008 class which was ranked seventh by Perfect Game Cross Checker.

With a great eye for talent and an outstanding ability to develop pitchers, 26 hurlers under Cozart's watch have been drafted into professional baseball in just 11 full-time coaching seasons. Even more impressive, only three of those 26 players drafted under Cozart's tutelage had been drafted coming out of high school.

Bryan Peters

Assistant Coach: High Point University

Peters followed Cozart from UCF, where the two worked together for the past two seasons as assistant coaches for the Knights. Peters joins the Panthers following a highly successful 13-year coaching career that included stints at UCF, Stetson and USF. While with UCF, Peters served as the squad's hitting coach and worked with the infielders.

During his two-year tenure at UCF, the Knights made dramatic improvements on offensive including finishing the 2008 season ranked 87th in the nation in batting average along with ranking 76th in hits and 27th in stolen bases with 100. Sophomore Shane Brown, a walk-on at UCF, led the team in nearly every offensive category in 2008 under Peters' guidance including a team-best .367 average and nine homeruns, after not hitting one as a freshman. Peters also helped develop Colin Arnold into an All-C-USA Second-team honoree this past season.

In his debut season with the Knights in 2007, the team eclipsed nearly all of their offensive totals from the previous year, including batting average, runs scored, on-base percentage, stolen bases, sacrifice flies and sac bunts. They also had more walks and fewer strikeouts than the 2006 campaign. Peters guided Kiko Vazquez to an All-C-USA First-Team honor, as the first baseman shattered his totals from his rookie season. Vazquez boasted a .364 batting average with nine homers and 57 RBI. Additionally, center fielder Tyson Auer was selected to the All-C-USA Second Team and third baseman Chris Duffy nabbed a spot on the C-USA All-Freshman Team.

Prior to going to Orlando, Peters spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Stetson, where he worked with the outfielders and was the team's first base coach. Before Stetson, Peters spent nine years as an assistant coach at USF and two years as a player with the Bulls. He served as USF's recruiting coordinator and hitting instructor and also worked with the defense, base running and conditioning.

Rich Wallace

Assistant Coach: High Point University

Wallace reunited with Cozart and fellow HPU assistant Bryan Peters, after the trio worked together at UCF for two seasons. Wallace joined the Panthers following a three-year stint (2005-08) as the volunteer assistant coach for the Knights.

At UCF, Wallace assisted with the hitters, worked with the catchers, served time as both the first and third base coach and played an active role with the summer baseball camp program. He began his coaching career as a student assistant with the Black and Gold in 2004.

Prior to coaching, Wallace was a four-year letterwinner at UCF from 2000-03. As a player for the Knights, Wallace was part of three teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament and was also a member of three Atlantic Sun regular season championships and a pair of A-Sun tournament titles.

During his career at UCF, Wallace garnered third-team all-Atlantic Sun honors as a freshman after batting .380 with five home runs and 38 RBI. Wallace was also named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball News in 2000. He completed his UCF career as the school's all-time leader in being hit by a pitch, both in career and single season totals.

Daniel Latham

Assistant Coach: High Point University

Latham, who was named a volunteer assistant at High Point in July, begins his coaching career with the Panthers following a one-year professional playing stint in the Minnesota Twins organization. Prior to professional baseball, Latham was a record-setting closer at Tulane University from 2003-07.

Latham's responsibilities will include on-field coaching with an emphasis on the pitching staff along with handling the daily maintenance of the program in areas like travel and academics. He will also be primarily responsible for the Panther baseball camps program.
