UNLV Infield Renovation!

Infield renovations totaling close to $25,000 at Earl E. Wilson Stadium were completed this week and UNLV baseball will have a new infield when it opens its 2008 season in late February.

This is the first major renovation to Earl E. Wilson Stadium at Roger Barnson Field since the facility was expanded to a 3,000-seat stadium that debuted on Jan. 29, 1994. A gift of $1.2 million was used for the construction and a total contribution of $6.6 million was given from the estate of Earl and Hazel Wilson. The Rebels began playing on the original diamond on April 1, 1973 and the field was named after the late Roger Barnson, a former UNLV assistant athletic director, in 1980.

Buddy Gouldsmith

Head Coach

As UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith enters his fourth season at the helm of Rebel baseball, he has built a strong program in the desert that is among the premier schools in the Mountain West Conference and the West. Once again this year the Rebels will be among the top contenders competing for the Mountain West Conference Championship as well as a spot in the NCAA Tournament. In fact, last season was the first time that a Gouldsmith-led club did not win either the MWC regular season or tournament title after his clubs won the tournament title in his first two years as head coach.

Gouldsmith became the sixth head coach in UNLV baseball history on June 9, 2003, after serving as an assistant coach for two years with the Rebels. As an assistant at UNLV, Gouldsmith served as the recruiting coordinator and hitting instructor. Under his guidance, the Rebels hit .324 as a team in 2003 and in 2002 had the MWC's batting champion and a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in Joe Wickman (.490 batting average in conference play).

Over his three years as head coach of the Rebels, Gouldsmith has coached 14 all-conference players, one player of the year and one all-American and has seen 12 players taken in the MLB draft. Last year Gouldsmith earned his 100th career coaching victory with an 8-5 win over San Diego State at the conference tournament, and he has an overall record of 101-83 (.549). He is the fourth coach in UNLV history to record 100 or more victories and the fastest to reach the milestone in Rebel history. Those victories have come while annually playing some of the most difficult schedules in the country, including the past two defending national champions. This season the Rebels are once again slated to play the NCAA title team, traveling to play Oregon State in May. In his second year at the helm Gouldsmith guided the Rebels to their third league regular-season and tournament championships and was named the 2005 MWC Coach of the Year for his efforts. UNLV played one of the toughest schedules in the nation that year and went 35-29 overall record, 23-7 in MWC play. Gouldsmith continued the Rebels' run of success in his first season as head coach, guiding UNLV to a 37-24 regular-season mark, including a 26-13 record at home. With the MWC Tournament being held at the friendly confines of Earl E. Wilson, the Rebels went on to defend the crown they won in 2003, beating San Diego State 6-3 for the 2004 title. Gouldsmith coached four All-MWC performers, including Eric Nielsen, the league's Player of the Year.

Mike Kirby

Assitant Coach

Kirby is making a return to collegiate coaching after spending the past nine years working with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Prior to that Kirby was an assistant at Cal State Fullerton for eight years from 1991-1999 and was a part of the Titans' squad that won the College World Series Championship in 1995. Overall the Titans made six College World Series appearances in Kirby's eight years on the staff and he coached 22 student-athletes who earned All-American honors.

Kirby earned his bachelor of arts degree from Cal State Fullerton in 1994. Kirby and wife Melissa have two daughters, Payten and Lauren.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to work with coach Gouldsmith and be a part of the Rebel Baseball staff," Kirby said. "I am eager to share my experience and build on the successes of UNLV Baseball."

David Martinez

Assitant Coach

Martinez is a former Rebel who comes to UNLV after spending the past two years coaching at Riverside Community College in Riverside, Calif., where he helped lead the Tigers to the 2007 California State Championship. Martinez also served as an assistant at Purdue during 2005 and at Cal State San Bernardino in 2004. He also worked as an associate scout for the Baltimore Orioles for two seasons.

Martinez spent the fall of 1997 with the UNLV baseball program as a player. He earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Cal State San Bernardino in 2004.

"Dave is an energetic and ambitious young coach with strong Southern California recruiting ties," Gouldsmith said. "His evaluating experience with the Baltimore Orioles and his recent tenure under Dennis Rogers at Riverside Community College have given him a proven history in both identifying and developing student-athletes."

UNLV Camp FAQs

Q. What should I bring to my baseball camp or showcase camp?

A. Many times the camp itself will have a recommended list of items to bring to camp, but here are a few things to help you. All position players should bring a bat and glove. Look like a baseball player by wearing a hat, jersey, belt, baseball socks, etc. You need to look the part. If you are a catcher, have your own gear. Hitters, bring your bat and helmet just in case. Don't expect to use the college's equipment and you must be ready to go! Borrow something from a teammate or coach if you do not have one.

Q. What is your refund policy?

A. We do not offer refunds on canceled campers, just a future camp credit if you decide to cancel, but we do have what is called "Cancellation Protection".

We offer basic Cancellation Protection to allow participants some peace of mind in case plans change. This allows us to keep our prices low and provide the best service possible. Due at the time of registration, Cancellation Protection entitles you to a full refund of camp fees should you cancel your registration more than 14 days prior to the start of an overnight camp, and 7 days prior to the start of a day camp. If you cancel within 14 or 7 days of the start of your session, we will give you a camp credit for all money paid.

The credit is valid for three years from camp date at any of our camps, clinics or prospect events. Credit with insurance is transferable to family members or friends, and good toward a future camp.

What they're saying...

Coach Gouldsmith and Coach Fenn,

Just a note to say "thank you" for a great camp experience for players and parents alike. Everything was so well organized and thought out. We enjoyed your discussion Sunday morning Coach Gouldsmith, your candor and honesty were refreshing. After the meeting, I spoke to you about Coach Fenn and how impressed and appreciative we were of him and the time he took with us. He was always prompt and courteous with both Mitch and me, something that I can't say about some of the other colleges!

Mitch loved the campus and the UNLV team members and we loved the proximity to home (Carlsbad) and the fact that you keep a close eye on them and their grades. I hope that we have an opportunity to speak again, but if that is regrettably not possible, we wanted to let you know that UNLV is held in high regards with our family.

Most Sincerely,

Lori E. Hennessy
