Buster Posey Claims Brooks Wallace Award

The Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year Award Selection Committee has named Florida State All-American catcher Buster Posey of Leesburg, Ga., as the fifth recipient of the award, which was presented in a national telecast (FCS) on Wednesday evening at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.
Posey conquered an elite field of 15 other semifinalists and finalists including consensus All-American shortstop Gordon Beckham of Georgia and pitcher Brian Matusz of San Diego. He will be honored Thursday afternoon in the Fourth on Broadway parade festivities along with the College Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2008.
The FSU standout was also named ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic Baseball Player of the Year for his classroom talents which follows many of the life tenets of the late Brooks Wallace.
The Wallace Award is a dedication to the memory of the former Texas Tech player and assistant coach. Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Tech from 1977-80. A four-year starter, he was named All-Southwest Conference and All-District VII his senior year. He led the Red Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the Southwest Conference Tournament in 1980. After playing two years in the Texas Rangers organization, he returned to Texas Tech and served as a graduate assistant and later as an assistant coach.

What they're saying...
Hi Chip. My son and I didn't get a chance to say thank you for the great opportunity Andrew had last week at the Advance Baseball School. Every day since he left last Friday, he has told me something new he has learned from you (especially with the catchers and the importance of interacting with the plate umpire) and your coaches and about his experience there. He enjoyed getting to know his head coach, Chuck Cleveland, and was very pleased with the written evaluation he gave Andrew. We actually may meet up with him some times here in Tampa since he lives and trains in our area. Andrew is anxious to go over his evaluation with his trainers here in Tampa (Jose Ortega of Impact Player Baseball Academy) and my brother-in-law, Donnie Scott, who is now training and converting Andrew into a catcher as will as playing shortstop. Donnie Scott was an MLB switch-hitting catcher in the 80's and managed in the Red's organization the past 17 years.
With Andrew being 13 yrs old and going into the 8th grade, he was naturally anxious about how he would perform playing with and against high school age players. Thanks for allowing him to attend the school as the experience gave him more confidence in his ability to contend with some of the older players. He also has a better understanding of what he needs to do to get better and the experience has given him a new drive.
I was hoping to spend a few minutes or so talking to you while I was in Tallahassee but didn't get the opportunity as I knew you were busy with running the school. I spoke to Chuck Cleveland about the recruiting process (the do's and don'ts) and what to expect and to do to get Andrew exposure and noticed by various schools, although I know Andrew's goal at this time is to be a Seminole (especially after getting the tour of the facilities and seeing how the players there are treated).
If you can avail yourself at your convenience to talk to me about the recruiting process and what I should do for Andrew going forward, I would greatly appreciate it. Please let me know if you can do this and I can contact you at a scheduled time.
Thank you in advance for your time and thanks for putting on and running a first-class baseball school. Andrew's friend and rommate, Alex and his dad Steve, who are Gator fans, were actually very impressed with your baseball school and the baseball facilities. I made sure I gave them a tour of the campus and the area. They were more impressed than they actually let on. I find it amazing when seeing the campus as its changed so much from the 80's when I attended and graduated from FSU.
Go Noles!
Sincerely,

Tony
