Doyle Student Anthony Hewitt is Phillies #1 Pick
he Phillies announced on Tuesday that they have agreed to terms with their first-round pick in last month's First-Year Player Draft, shortstop Anthony Hewitt.
The 19-year-old product of the Salisbury (Conn.) School received a bonus of $1,380,000 and will report to Clearwater, Fla., later this week, scouting director Marti Wolever said in a statement issued by the team.
Hewitt's senior year of high school yielded a .536 batting average, eight home runs and 19 RBIs.
Hewitt, the 24th overall selection in this year's Draft, earned praise from Wolever on Draft day for his ability to hit for power and his fielding prowess on the left side of the infield. Though Hewitt played shortstop in high school, Wolever said that he will have a chance to play third base at the professional level.
Hewitt had committed to play for Vanderbilt University, but after being selected by the Phillies, expressed a desire to "pursue my professional career as soon as possible."
"I'm eager to start," Hewitt said on Draft day.
Hewitt becomes the 27th player of the 53 the Phillies selected in the Draft to sign with the team. The Phillies have now signed their first five selections.
