Salem State Avoids Elimination
The Vikings celebrated the opening of the program's new baseball facility by earning the No. 3 seed for the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament en route to completing the 2008 season with 25 victories.
SSC (25-15), under the guidance of 26th year head coach Ken Perrone, christened its new field in grand fashion on March 20, defeating the Pilgrims of New England College, 16-4. Senior first baseman and team MVP Ken Luongo (Wilmington) made history when he belted the first homer, a two-run shot to right, at the state-of-the-art facility. Freshman shortstop Ryan Kane also "went yard" during the historic game.
Luongo, who batted .379 and knocked in 33 runners, also led the SSC pitching staff with six wins. Luongo, senior second baseman Bobby Celentano (Peabody) and freshman shortstop Ryan Kane (Nahant) were named to the All-MASCAC first team. Cleanup hitter Kane collected team-highs in RBI (43), hits (52) and total bases (83) while batting .366. Luongo and Kane shared the home run lead with five each. Celentano recorded 25 RBI, scored 29 times, produced nine two-baggers and batted .312.
SSC won 25 games in a season for the 10th time and 20 or more games for the 18th time since Perrone's first season at the helm, 1983.
